This blaufränkisch produced by Evolúció comes from the Burgenland region of Austria, located on the eastern side of the country by the Hungarian border. The oldest vine growing region in Austria, it is famous for producing some of the best Austrian red wines, especially those from the blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes. This 100% blaufrankisch comes from part gravelly and part loam soils from vines averaging 20 years old with no irrigation. It is fermented with natural yeasts and aged in large, neutral wood casks, which lends to the slight hint of spice present in the wine. Although not mentioned on the label, it is organically grown and certified in Austria, and the producer also uses biodynamic methods in the vineyard and in the cellar. It has lovely rip red and dark fruit tones with a touch of earthy musk and fresh acidity to make it lively. It is somewhat flinty and saline, bringing out a unique, savory quality with light tannins and a medium body.
